Greenbrier Learning Center's goals are:
to improve students' reading skills.to bolster students' overall academic achievement.to foster students social emotional development and ability to make good choices.to improve students' homework grades.to support parents' involvement in their children's education.
GLC achieves these goals through its two programs, the Learning ROCKS! Afterschool program and the Parent and Community Outreach Program.
Learning ROCKS! is GLC's flagship program, providing year-round academic achievement and enrichment opportunities to children in grades 3-5 at two locations: Greenbrier Baptist Church and Virginia Gardens Apartments. Learning ROCKS! is supported by the Learning Links AmeriCorps Program where AmeriCorps Members provide a critical link across three main aspects of a child's day: at school, after school, and in the community. Learning ROCKS! focuses on four themes: Literacy (Reading, Rockin, and Writing), Community and Culture (Out of this World), Healthy Lifestyles (Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise), and Life Skills (Got skills?)
With the Parent and Community Outreach Program GLC provides weekly and monthly topic based, informational workshops and leadership opportunities for parents and adults at both sites. The workshops focus on Healthy Families, Personal Development, Education, and Community and Safety. Past workshops include: Self Defense Class, How to Read a Report Card, Yoga, Healthy Cooking and Nutrition, How to Prepare for a Parent/Teacher Conference, and so many more!
Mission: Greenbrier Learning Center's mission is to promote education, youth leadership and strong families through structured enrichment programs beyond the school day. Utilizing a community-driven approach, we foster academic achievement and personal growth among our after-school students, act as a resource for youth and adults, and increase collaboration among service providers in Northern Virginia.
