Best Buddies was founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, and began as a college chapter. From our headquarters in Miami, Best Buddies has expanded to all 50 states, 50 countries, and touches the lives of over 700,000 people. Best Buddies works with all sectors of the community to involve individuals with disabilities in a volunteer-based friendship. We strive to put an end to the loneliness having a disability can bring. Through friendship, we hope to assist in building self-esteem, and promoting independence and employment.
The Best Buddies Citizens program pairs adults in a one-to-one friendship invloving minimal time committment and possibilities for social outings. We also have high schools, colleges, jobs, e-Buddies, ambassador, and middle schools programs throughout the country.
Mission: To establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
