Horton's Kids

*Now Looking for Volunteers for Spring 2022 Semester!* Applications are being accepted now on a rolling basis

Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve 500 children in grades K-12 living in Wellington Park & Stanton Oaks – neighborhoods that have been profoundly impacted by decades of disinvestment and barriers to opportunity. Your impact is dramatic: children in Horton’s Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school.

We are looking for consistent volunteers who can commit to coming in-person to SE DC once a week, every week to support our participants as they recover learning that was lost because of the pandemic.

Horton’s Kids is looking for volunteers to fill the following roles from January through mid-May:

Elementary Classroom Assistants: You will be working with participants whose grades range from kindergarten through 4th grade. You will be assisting with our high-dosage tutoring model to assist with recovering pandemic related learning loss. In this role you will function as a classroom assistant, supporting after-school teachers and Horton’s Kids staff members with social emotional learning instruction, academic activities, and mealtimes. (Available: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 4-6:30pm)

Older Youth Homework Help: This role is dual in that you will be providing a high school student social emotional support by being a consistent adult role model in their life who they can look up to and lean on for guidance as they come to Horton’s Kids to get assistance with completing their homework assignments. (Available Mondays from 5:30-6:30pm)
These opportunities are in-person opportunities. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. All volunteers will be required to wear a mask inside of the Horton’s Kids program sites.

The addresses of the program sites are below:

Wellington Park Community Resource Center: 2500 Pomeroy Rd. SE, WDC 20020

Barry Farm Recreation Center: 1230 Sumner Rd SE, WDC 20020

Project Create: 2208 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE, Washington, DC 20020

Prospective volunteers should be comfortable getting themselves to program sites independently, but transportation from the Anacostia metro station to the program sites may become available.

All prospective volunteers are required to submit a volunteer application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, for priority consideration please submit your application before December 17th. Questions can be directed to Caroline Malone, Senior Development and Volunteer Coordinator, caroline@hortonskids.org
