Horton's Kids

About

*Now Looking for Volunteers for Fall 2023 Semester!* Updated August 21st, 2023.

Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve 600 children and their families living in Wellington Park & Stanton Oaks – neighborhoods that have been profoundly impacted by decades of disinvestment and barriers to opportunity.

The Horton’s Kids Academics team looks for consistent volunteers who can commit to coming to our programs in Southeast DC each week to support our high-intensity tutoring efforts. We ask that volunteers make a year-long commitment, with flexibility for people in college.

Tutors will assist the Youth Programs Team with executing high quality programs that serve kids K-8 in the after-school space. HK Volunteers will tutor participants, assist teachers as they deliver instruction, and provide general program support. You will also act as a consistent adult role model in the students’ lives who they can look up to and lean on for guidance.

If you are passionate about empowering youth and can commit to volunteering once a week, this is a great opportunity for you!

Elementary SchoolMonday, Tuesday (5:30-7:00pm)

Middle SchoolMonday, Thursday (5:00-6:30pm)

High School: Provide ad hoc tutoring on specific high school subjects with individual participants. Schedule is flexible.

Program Site Information:

  • Wellington Park Community Resource Center: 2500 Pomeroy Rd. SE, Washington DC 20020
  • Douglass Community Center: 1922 Frederick Douglass Court SE, Washington DC 20020

Volunteers should be comfortable getting themselves to program sites independently. Horton’s Kids offers a free shuttle to pick up volunteers from program sites and drop them off at the Anacostia Metro at the end of each program day (7:00pm).

All prospective tutors are required to complete the Horton’s Kids Volunteer Tutor Application. Applicants who meet our selection criteria will be notified to complete a background check and training.

Applications submitted by August 28th will be eligible to start volunteering the week of September 18th, but we accept applications on a rolling basis.
