The Backside Learning Center provides free educational services to the men and women who work with the horses in the barn area, or backside, of Churchill Downs and Trackside Louisville. Our programming includes English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL), English practice, tutoring, bilingual game night, technology class, citizenship class, Spanish class, art class, yoga class and guitar class. Almost all of our classes & tutoring depends on volunteers.
Note: BLC hours are between 11:30am-8:00pm Monday thru Friday. The Center can be open during limited weekend hours by appointment. Days, times and frequency of direct service will fall between these hours but will depend upon the work schedule and availability of students and volunteers. Opportunities will be available each year beginning in mid-March, and will end in early December when racing ends at Churchill Downs. Applications for volunteer positions will be accepted up to September 15 th.
Mission: The Backside Learning Center enhances the lives of equine workers by providing education, life skill resources and community. We do this by offering relevant learning experiences, diverse social opportunities, and personal and professional development to equestrian workers in a caring, respectful environment.
