Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont

Goodwill Industries International

Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired those who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then resold or were given to the people who repaired them. The system worked, and the Goodwill philosophy of "a hand up, not a hand out" was born.

Southern Piedmont Territory

Goodwill serves people in the Southern Piedmont region, which includes 18 counties - 13 counties in North Carolina and five counties in South Carolina. The Agency has a retail store or provides services in eight of these 18 counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lancaster, Lincoln, Union and York.

When people DONATE gently used items to Goodwill it provides the "inventory" that stocks the stores. Individuals then shop at one of our stores and... PURCHASE the items that are donated, whichgenerates the dollars needed to.... ASSIST clients with a range of employment and training skills so that they can... find a job and pursue meaningful WORK OPPORTUNITIES to support themselves and their families.

(Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont does not offer opportunities for individuals needing to complete court ordered community service hours.)
