Founded in 1972 as an interfaith organization in partnership with twenty-five congregations, Shepherd Center was born from the concept of older people caring for each other. Over 525 volunteers, mostly older adults, help enhance the lives of other older adults through learning opportunities, a focus on wellness and services to help people remain in their homes. With many successful programs and services already in place, Shepherd Center continues to seek new ways to serve the needs of residents in the Southtown, Brookside and Waldo communities.
In late 2007, Shepherd's Center Central merged with Shepherd's Center of Shawnee Mission. The Shawnee Mission service area serves all of Johnson County particularly the northern part.
Mission: Shepherd's Center of Kansas City Central, with its partner organizations, enables mid-life and older adults to share their talents, skills and wisdom for the good of their peers and community.
