Contributing to your community through meaningful volunteer work, is one way to stay youngful and keep active. Older Americans are valuable resources and that is why the Greater Hartford Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), offers unique opportunities for people aged 55 and older to be actively engaged in their communities. Based on your interests, knowledge, skills and experiences, we match you to volunteer positions using a coordinated and organized approach, that creates a collaborative and rewarding experience for you and the organization or project you become affiliated with. Opportunities include assisting children with reading one-on-one as an America READS tutor, or teaching them about healthy lifestyles through our CATCH Healthy Habits program. Volunteers can also serve with humanitarian organizations like Food Share Inc., the American Red Cross, CRIS Radio, Pets on Wheels of CT Inc & local Hospitals. Further, volunteers can guide travelers and visitors as Bradley Airport Ambassadors or assist consumers by mediating and recording complaints at the Attorney General's Office.
RSVP volunteer A. Pianin has been serving for 9 years with the Consumer Assistance Unit as part of the Office of the Attorney General. He says, "Its interesting to see the issues and scams that people get themselves involved in. As a volunteer advocate, we try to remain neutral and resolve the issues at hand for both parties. It is satisfying when the issues can be mutually resolved."
RSVP volunteer C. Smith-Davis is an active Health Coach and served with our CATCH Healthy Habits program. She explains, "By working with these children and seeing how the program has made such a great impact on them and their families, has allowed me to fulfill one of my missions in life, 'each one, teach one'."
Like Mr. Pianin and Mrs. Smith-Davis, your efforts will enable organizations to offer vital services and have a direct impact on those in need. BE the change you want to see in the world, start leading, sharing and inspiring today!
