144th Criminal District Court, Bexar County Courthouse

About

Student Activities:  Provide the court with procedural and substantive legal advice regarding the disposition and efficient completion of cases. Review, summarize, research, and analyze matters before the court. Research and recommendations assist the court in resolving legal arguments presented and in deciding cases expeditiously. Students may also conduct legal research; review case records and filings, analyze options; draft legal memoranda, propose opinions and orders and discuss legal analysis with judge.

Students placed in the judge's chambers work exclusively with the judge and court staff.  The placement  will provide a better understanding of the practice, specifically the administrative details of how a judge may maintain the courtroom and chambers. This externship offers a rich experience and varies depending upon each judge's preference. The placement provides a unique opportunity to view a state judge while operating through daily decision-making, disposition of cases and understanding the development of the law. The placement will offer practical insights into the process of adjudication, knowledge of civil law and procedure and improvement in your legal research and writing skills. The range of tasks can include evaluating substantive motions, conducting research and writing memoranda ("bench memo").  Volunteers may also participate in conferences, both pre-trial and status conferences and settlement negotiations.
