UGA Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden

About

The Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden (LAEG), a 1-acre space located on UGA's north campus at the corners of Thomas and Baldwin Streets and directly behind Baldwin Hall, is the only Botanical Garden of its kind in the state of Georgia.  The LAEG is managed by the UGA Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI).

Focused on bringing attention to the fantastic diversity of plants important to the peoples of Latin America for food, medicine, fiber, and numerous other uses, the LAEG is always happy to receive students or community members interested in volunteering.  Those with an interest in ethnobotany, the agricultural sciences, and Latin American culture are all encouraged to consider this option.

In addition to the opportunities of developing horticultural skills in plant propagation, plant care, pruning, etc., LAEG volunteers may also participate in the annual spring State Botanical Garden Plant Sale (Plantapalooza) and join the LAEG in partnering with Athens-area schools to develop Latin American plantings at school gardens in support of instruction in the biological and social sciences.  Ms. Karen Moss Bryan, the curator of the LAEG, brings with her many years of horticultural experience and is happy to pass those skills along to those interested in working at this UGA north campus garden oasis.  Students or community members have the option of volunteering for both short and long-term appointments.
