This was my first time volunteering for a 5k race, and it ended up being one of the best experiences I've ever had. I was seeking out volunteer opportunities for this summer and came across a few opportunities but this one stood out to me the most. I had never heard of a beer 5k, and wanted to know what it was about. I had the opportunity to work alongside the owner of the brewery and the director of the Spark foundation and learned how the race came about, the safety regulations and drinking regulations for the course, how long it took to plan, who made the course, how they advertised the event and more information about the Spark foundation. I was also amazed by how many people came along to help make this event come together to help raise money for health and fitness education and opportunities in our school systems. As we set up cones, fencing, and barriers I was able to learn a little more about the people around me and make new friends and work as a team by dividing and conquering the tasks that needed to be done. This was such an amazing event, I can't wait for the next race, and plan to help with set up and cheering on the runners!
