i loved being there! i went on a lab field trip and wanted to volunteer after hearing about all the great things they do for the community. the staff is very very nice and easy to talk to.
I helped to repair facilities that were brought down in preparation for hurricane Irma and I harvested some medicinal herbs for tea blends. The products go to underprivileged individuals and it was good to be able to help them have a sustainable source of healthy foods.
I was able to work in the garden and learn about the different plants and crops in the garden. I learned that Ocra is ripe when the vegetable is the size of your pinky and it can grow to as big as a banana. We picked all the ocra off the plants and weeded around them and the basil, tomato and rosemary plants. I also learned that when basil stops growing it produces long, pretty purple flowers. I really enjoyed my time in the garden and being from Ohio, I learned a lot about these southern crops. We composted many of the large Ocra and as well as the weeds and the vines that were choking many of the plants.
I really enjoyed working at the UGArden. Because there was a lot of veggies that needed harvesting from the long weekend, I did that instead of working in the herb garden. I would love to go back and do it again!
It was very soothing and relaxing to plant the Holy Basil. I enjoyed my time at the Garden.
relaxing and rewarding
Weeding in the herb garden, and continuing the dry room for the herbs
