Event Description | This is Garima Singh, a Junior at Westwood High School in RRISD. I am interested in computer science and would like to promote computer science education and interest among young people. I have started a CoderDojo in Round Rock. CoderDojo is a non-profit volunteer-led community of free programming clubs for young people. At a Dojo, young people between ages 7 and 17 learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology using MIT Scratch, HTML, Javascript, Python and more. There is a focus on community, peer learning and self-led learning with an emphasis on helping others and showing how coding is a force for change in the world! Learn more on their website: http://coderdojo.com/ We have received tremendous interest in our Dojo for the first three sessions! Our first session was a sold out session with 25 kids and 20 parents attending and 19 kids on the waitlist. Our next session sold out within 2 hours and had 27 kids attending. The third session sold out in even less time with 30 kids currently registered to attend the session. We are extremely excited about the huge response to our program! We will be registering kids for every week's session based on the number of mentors we have signed up at each session. In order to be able to serve the maximum number of kids that can fit in comfortably at our venue, we would like to grow our mentor pool so that we always have 8-11 mentors available at each session. We are now looking for more mentors and volunteers to help run the Dojo. We need people who are enthusiastic about being around young people and helping them learn and explore. Any tech knowledge will help as we can develop the curriculum according to the skill sets you have. You can also sign up with us in order to give a talk or run just one session on a topic you are an expert in. We host a 2 hour session every Sunday from 4pm-6pm at TechShop Round Rock. We may not need every mentor to be present at each meeting. If we get many mentors, we can make a rotating schedule so that we have enough mentors at each session. |
