Event Description | This is where our accepted MAPS mentors will track their Fall orientation and training hours. Mentor Training #1: Tuesday 11/8 OR Wednesday 11/9, 10:00am - 11:30am (students pick the one that works for them). Takes place at PSU and is lead by our MAPS team (you two with my support where needed/desired!). This is the intro to the program and gets into the basics of mentorship, why it's important, and what we hope for mentorship in the MAPS program. Location: OrgSpace in Smith Mentor Training #2: Tuesday 11/15 and Wednesday 11/16, 9:30am - 12:00pm. Takes place at Alder. This is the training day that Joy / Greater Than leads, and will include a tour of the school and conversations about the students and communities that make up Alder. Training begins at 10am at Alder; for those needing carpooling, meet at 9:30 in the lobby of Smith Memorial Student Union (and let us know in advance if you'll be carpooling!). College Day @ Alder Elementary School. Friday November 18th. TBD for time. The selected grade for us was KINDERGARTEN! We have 20 minutes for each class to present, to plant the seed of college. Mentor Training #3: Tuesday 11/29 and Wednesday 11/30, 10:00am - 11:30am. This final training/meeting in Fall takes place at PSU, and is often targeted towards helping future matching. Mentors fill out an "all about me" page and might write a letter to their mentee introducing themselves, both of which are used over winter break to help match mentors and mentees. Location: OrgSpace in Smith Alder Elementary School has a large population of students who face economic barriers in a diverse multilingual and multicultural area. PSU volunteers meet with Alder students weekly for one-on-one support to build relationships and foster a culture that promotes college attainment. In addition to supporting mentees through one-on-one connection in the classroom, mentors build strong relationships with their mentees as noon-time "lunch buddies," to support students social-emotional development and engage in fun conversations, games, and activities to get the mentees thinking about college, higher education, and future careers. The Mentors: Alder and Portland State (MAPS) program is a collaboration between Portland State University and Together We Are Greater Than at Alder Elementary School (located at 17200 SE Alder St, Portland, OR 97233). MAPS mentors have the option of mentoring students in the English Language or Spanish Immersion track, depending on mentors' interest and language ability. Mentor Primary Duties:
Time Commitment: Mentors commit to one mentor session per week on either Tuesday or Wednesday between 9am - 1pm (actual time commitment will be ~2-3 hours within that time frame but exact time is still TBD) through Winter and Spring terms. Mentor training will begin the second half of Fall term and take place over 3-4 weeks on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings (depending on your availability). Mentors will be matched with their mentee and begin mentoring starting Winter Term 2022. Location / Transportation: Mentorship takes place at Alder Elementary School in East Portland (17200 SE Alder St.). Tuesdays mentors will have the option of carpool transportation from the PSU campus through a partnership with Zipcar. Wednesday mentors will need to travel to Alder independently, as carpooling is unavailable.
The MAPS Mentorship program is a program of the Student Community Engagement Center. The Student Community Engagement Center's mission is to provide robust and varied co-curricular opportunities for all students at Portland State to engage with the community and become catalysts for change. |
