Volunteer Checklist

Before the event:

  • Set up the distribution site

    •

  • Help courier bring in food

    • Tuesday at GFH they park by the entrance of the room on the north west side of Athens North.

  • Organize food into similar type foods- take food out of boxes with discretion. Make it look good! But keep in mind that things roll.

  • Dump out bags of lemons, break up bunches of bananas- try to help make it go farther.

  • Make it easy to see what there is so less people touch items, just grab what they want insteading of having to sort through.

During the event:

  • Welcome residents and ask them to form a line at one end of the food station

  • Ensure each party signs in before collecting food

  • Explain how the food comes from Boulder Food Rescue and is reclaimed from grocery store "leftovers" that would otherwise go to the landfill

  • Keep the area clean

After the event:

  • Wipe down tables, sweep the floor, and turn off the lights

  • Take any damaged/unwanted food to the compost bin (remove produce stickers or twisty ties!!)

    • Tuesday at GFH - compost is by the dumpster on the corner of Athens St. and 19th St. There is recycling and trash here as well.

  • Flatten boxes and bring to the recycling bin

  • Excess Food

    • Tuesday at GFH - Take excess food to the Buff Pantry in the basement of the UMC

    • Saturdays- Take excess food to the Rec Center

    • You can also call the BFR volunteer line (9-5 7 days a week) if you have excess food that you weren't able to distribute. Their number is 720-445-5237

Food Safety Guidelines for Distribution Volunteers

Best Practices

  • Don’t place food on ground

  • Frozen food must remain frozen

  • Refrigerated food should stay below 41 degrees

Meat, dairy, and other high protein

The risk of food borne illnesses increases when high protein foods like meat, dairy, and tofu, which need to be kept cool, are at room temperature for an hour or two.

Couriers, make sure you use a cooler to transport and store refrigerated and frozen goods.

Why do we do this?

  • The UN Sustainable Development Goal number two is to end hunger.

  • UN SDG number 17 is to partner for the goals! We partner with you, BFR, grocery stores, Feed the Stampede (and the Basic Needs Center), as well as, Community Food Share, and CU Farm and Garden Club to help get healthy food to our campus community.

  • Less food waste is good for the planet- food in the landfill creates methane, a greenhouse gas, and even if grocery stores are composting the over stock, that material is hauled over an hour away with oil and gas trucks, through low-income communities polluting their air directly.

  • We are more likely to recover from future climate disruptions the more in-community we are. Meeting with and making friends and directly supporting those who are living on the edge of their funding creates more resiliency for them and campus on a whole.

  • Our mission is to foster and catalyze a culture of sustainability on campus and beyond- get inspired and start a food recovery program wherever you move to after Boulder!

Thank you!
