Ten WBA members and I volunteered with the Austin Food Bank. We helped process and sort 6,960 pounds of food and drink which added up to 5800 meals! I really enjoyed helping the food bank prepare to serve thousands of people. It felt great to help and get WBA involved.
WBA member Lauren Goodson and I attended Reading Aces. Reading Aces is a non-profit organization that builds the literacy skills of low-income students through oral reading. It was a great experience because, although we weren’t there for very long, it was fun to get to know the kids a little bit and get them excited about reading. The volunteers were asked to work with a group of about three kids, let them pick out a book, keep them engaged by asking them questions about the story as they read, and help them whenever they had trouble reading. I would encourage anyone who likes working with kids to participate in Reading Aces!
