    Richard @ SureWalk

After signing in with the SureWalk desk office, I waiting and worked on assignments in a Jester West auditorium until there was a need for a SureWalk. Another student and I walked with the people who requested a sure walk to locations in West Campus while we had a conversation along the way. We were provided with a reflective vest and a flashlight to ensure that we were visible and could see along the dark streets.
The students we walked with commented over feeling much safer when having someone to walk with in the late hours of the night.
I feel that I made a difference in someone's life because the SureWalk service provides a free and safe way for students to get to locations while assuring them that they can be on campus late at night and still get home safe.
I definitely will volunteer for SureWalk more often because being on wait for someone to ask for a walk motivates me to stay awake and get my assignments done. It is a good way to help the UT community and myself.

Shadow Food Run and Orientation at Trader Joe's Rollingwood

Upon arriving at Trader's Joe, I and another volunteer met with the Keep Austin Fed team and the coordinator in order to be informed of what the organization does and how they do it. Due to not having a car, I was not able to go on the food runs so I assisted the volunteers with categorizing and packing the surplus food into boxes. We then weighed the food groups in order to keep track of how much food was being moved around; loaded them into vehicles, and were distributed to different companies or locations.

    Plate Waste Day-Nov 8! (Kinsolving)

Upon meeting and having breakfast with other volunteers and UT Green Corps members, we lined up tables in front of the dishwasher assembly line along with an information stand where students can win prizes for answering trivia questions about the awareness of excess in the community. I, alongside with students who were helping out for a lab, received 'finished' meals from the students in the Kinsolving and separated edible foods from liquids into containers. Through the trivia questions, students interested in how much food was being wasted were quizzed and informed about the reality of our world.
The food collected from students after three hours was then measured to visualize the amount that food is wasted in one location at one time interval in one university. Though I had to leave early, it was interesting to see how much food becomes wasted.
Students were, in a way, shamed for throwing away their food; I even saw a student, who was in line to drop off their plates, realize what was going on and decide to finish their food and drink so that there would be nothing to dispose off.
Essentially, I feel like I made an impact in the community because groups and organizations like these provide a visual representation for what we are misusing or throwing away, effectively motivating people to rethink about their actions.

Alderbrook Park: Butterfly garden mulching & plant maintenance

As a part of the city-wide volunteer event, I participated in the Butterfly garden mulching & plant maintenance that was to take place from 8am to 12pm. However, I arrived at 9 and by 10, the rain was too heavy to continue. Despite being cut short on time, the volunteer group worked hard and was able to accomplish a lot in the time given. We got rid of weeds, grass, and anything that obstructed the view of the plants that were supposed to be there. We will continue with the maintenance by returning the next week to finish mulching the land and ensuring that the plants are in good condition.

    Waller Creek - CLEAN UP

Once volunteers submitted their liability release, we were supplied with materials such as gloves, trash/recycle bags, a bucket, and a reaching tool. Prior to working, we were offered breakfast tacos and water.
It was a good experience that definitely made an impact in the UT community because with all of the events and construction going on, our campus can get polluted. It was not an easy task if you were dedicated to finding as much trash and recycle material as possible however, it did help keep the Waller Creek clean.
