Dr. Melina Abdullah Presentation – Black Lives Matter
    Youth Tutoring & Mentoring (305) - Section E

With this session, like the two that came before, I had to improvise by printing out my own materials for Alexis to practice with. Because this could possibly have been our last session together, I cut Alexis a deal. I told him that if he spent the first hour doing reading comprehension and sentence structure, I would let him watch a movie of his choice for the last hour. He agreed to this and he did his problems successfully. Overall this experience has been a positive one for me and I am glad to have met Alexis and his family. He's a special kid and I wish him the best with whatever he does moving forward.

This session was similar to that of the week that came before it. Alexis did not bring any homework or study materials with him this time so I printed out more worksheets for him. This time I wanted to focus on sentence structure so I compiled a list of words with their definitions and I asked Alexis to first write the part of speech for each word and then create a sentence with that particular word. He was successful with this exercise, more successful than I thought he would've been and I was proud of him for that. To me, it showed that he was understanding what I had taught him.

Relay for Life: Claremont-La Verne vs. Cancer

I attended the Relay for Life event on Saturday. I had never been to an event like this before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was a little confused about where to go at first but once I asked one of the chairs where to go, I was all set. I volunteered at one of the stands making luminary bags and tying necklaces. I thought making the bags was really sweet because I was able to feel what other families felt when they lost a loved one to cancer. Tying the necklaces was a little hard but once I got the hang of it, it went by fairly quickly. I also walked a few miles worth of laps during the 3 hours I was at the event. Overall I would definitely attend this event again just because of the message behind it.

Because Alexis's school year was winding down, he didn't bring any worksheets or papers with him to his session on 5/16. I knew that showing him around campus would certainly not take up the entire 2 hours of our time together so I improvised. I printed out some worksheets that were similar to the ones Alexis has brought with him in the beginning and gave them to him to work on. Though the material was slightly different, I feel that he was able to learn something new working on problems that were not the same as the ones he was used to; I feel like mixing things up a little bit can be beneficial for students in the long run.

After missing two weeks due to Alexis being at summer camp and sick (not at the same time, fortunately), we resumed our sessions on 5/9. Alexis had more English homework for me to help him with, again the same type of Latin/Greek roots as before. I changed my approach this time around and I helped him try to understand the roots more on his own by having him form his own words. He struggled at first but eventually he got the hang of it. I feel that this was an effective exercise because it allows him to understand etymology a little bit better; if he understands how words are formed and understood, he'll likely understand English a little better in the coming years.

This session had me working with Alexis solely on his math homework for the week. We had practiced area and perimeter with quadrilaterals before but this time we worked with triangles of different kinds. It was somewhat difficult explaining the different types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) but once he understood that area could be found the way no matter the type of triangle, the lesson went smoothly. It was interesting for me because I had to remember how to do math problems I haven't done since my freshman year of high school.

I had to skip a session scheduled for 4/4/18 because Alexis was sick so it was good to get back to business the following week. For this session, Alexis had English homework that he needed help completing. Fortunately this was the same type of assignment that Alexis had already had from previous sessions so it didn't take too long to complete. He only really had trouble with analogies but in all fairness, they did seem difficult for a kid his age. I even struggled with them to an extent and I'm a college student. We finished early and I showed him around campus for the rest of the session.

During our third session, Alexis needed help with both math and English homework, much like the previous week. This math assignment was a combination of different concepts, such as perimeter, area, and percents while his English assignment was the same style of worksheet we had worked on before. I appreciated this because Alexis was clearly becoming familiar with the layout of this type of assignment. After reviewing the word list and pronunciating each one, we worked on forming sentences and labeling the correct part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) for each word.
