This week at run club, we continued our October "fun run" for the girls who were out last week due to it being Halloween. We emphasized the importance or warming up and did so before having the girls run one mile on the outside track. We then cooled down, gave out the rewards for the girls who have completed their mile marks, and had snack.
Last week at run club, we had our "pumpkin run" in honor of Halloween for our October race. The coaches dressed up and facilitated a one mile run on the outdoor track. Since it was a special day, we had treat bags for the girls and ended the time by watching a Halloween movie.
This week at CPL Run Club, we reviewed the previous week's lesson about proper running form and the three elements of a successful run (warm up, run, cool down) as well as the importance of each. We demonstrated appropriate warming up techniques through plyometrics and assisted the girls in performing them. We then set the timer and had the girls complete as many laps as they could before cooling down.
More Than a Meal is a product of Idlewild Presbyterian Church that allows you to serve a meal to whoever comes. The way it is set up allows you to serve your guests at their table and then sit down and hangout with them. Each guest has the opportunity to write down their joys and concerns and they are all read aloud as a prayer. More Than a Meal is a more engaged way to serve the homeless or jobless community of Memphis and it brings you together in a way that feels more special, to me at least, than just putting food on someone's plate.
At running club this week we talked about the differences in walking, jogging, running, and sprinting. We demonstrated each and then had an activity that allowed the girls to practice each. We ended club by having snack and doing homework.
I am a coach at CPL's girls run club. We meet every week and teach the girls a running-related lesson before having them do a running game or activity. We end by giving them a snack and having homework help. This year we have a new tracking system so that the girls can see exactly how far they are running, which is really neat. Once a month we have a themed race to instill a sense of fun in the running.
