Working with Will and connecting with other members in Nashman was a great experience. We had productive meetings with clear end goals and Will(as well as Professor Kelso) was very flexible/patient with helping us through this evaluation this semester.

This semester, my group and I have been working with CNHED. Our communication and overall meetings with Hailey have been efficient and helpful. She has been able to provide us with all of the tools we need(examples, past work, additional information) to develop our advocacy toolkit. We've been able to learn more about the organization, contribute new ideas and tactics for developing out kit, and she's been very helpful with any questions that we've had throughout the process. Currently, we are waiting for edits for our first draft of the toolkit and we will have more meetings with Hailey about any more ideas that we come up with and how to start reaching out target audiences for advocacy.

I'm glad the work is going well, but you have not met the requirements of this assignment. You were to reflect on (i.e., give meaning to) the work you've done, per the assignment sheet on BB (Community-engaged scholarship project link). Be sure to read the instructions for your second reflection that is due April 15.

One of my greatest “Aha” factors that I’ve learned about service learning is that organizations all have different ways of functioning and getting things done. Seeing these many effective ways shows me there is a lot of diversity and flexibility that needs to be made in nonprofit work in order to make things happen (especially when it involves different teams and goals.) Another thing I’ve learned during this experience was that service learning requires a lot of communication between the helper/volunteer and coordinator. Volunteers should be able to speak on what they are learning in their experience and why is has been impactful, while coordinators should be asking what they can do more (or less of) to make the experience a great learning one about the ins and outs of the organizations’ work.

My group’s contribution to CNHED was creating an advocacy toolkit, which I think helped in my understanding of housing issues in DC. I was more able to learn about the different ways in which people in the DC community can help and how they can market this issue and possible solutions to others. Especially during and after this pandemic, I think many people will be looking for ways to help the housing crisis in DC, as it relates widely to economic development in the city and the rising cases of homelessness. I’ve learned mostly about the ways to engage the audience that you are targeting through spreading powerful messages related to widely shared goals. I’ve also learned how important is to reach out to other community members to lean on their connections and better knowledge of specific skills and practices to achieve a common goal.

You and Taarika worked through a lot of challenges this semester. You should be very proud of the great work you accomplished, and how you can use it in the future. Awesome job!

In my last day with Active Minds, I created a graphic for the upcoming holidays. I was able to work somewhat with the Graphic Design and customize this graphic using Active minds branding and inspiration from what the organization does yearlong for their community.
