Hands of Hope
Greenhouse Building work day

Not many volunteers were needed, but we did whatever was asked of us to do. Gathered lumber from Lowe’s and brought it back to the building site. Our leader gave us a tour of the gardens.

Bear Blitz 2018

Setting up Christmas decorations for the Ozarks Regional YMCA was a fun way to spend the morning. Along with the other volunteers, I was there to help set up the lobby, stairs, gym areas, and front desk for the holidays. First off, we got all the decorations from storage in the basement of the building. After carrying them up, we did things like set up Christmas trees, reroute lights so we could plug in string lights, and unbox everything. Assembling those basics was probably the most heavy-lifting part of the day. The fun parts were, in my opinion, deciding where everything would go. We coordinated where to hang each wreath, how to arrange small trees, and what color garland should go on different columns. Myself and two others hung up a long string of ornaments along a ceiling overhang which ended up looking really cool. Arranging the ladder to hang up everything took quite a while, but it all looked nice in the end. The amount of volunteers we had was really helpful, because it was clear that if we weren't there, it would've taken valuable time away from already-busy administrator(s) day to set everything up. Volunteering really helped them to get everything set up quickly and not have to do everything all by themselves. Although this service was not something that immediately seems pressing, I think small acts like this are important. Getting in the holiday spirit or even just putting a smile on people's faces by having the decorations present is a good cause. I know that the holidays can be a difficult time for some, so hopefully for regular members of the YMCA, seeing the decorations up will brighten their day, even if just a little bit. I'm happy that I can say I contributed to bringing the spirit of the season to this organization.
