I didn’t know anything about this event coming in, but being able to “eavesdrop” on all the workshops and stories was meaningful. My scope of knowledge about the Austin city and community broadened, and I learned to look at the housing issues in a new way. The logistics was a little off, however. The person in charge told us that their givepulse event was somehow cancelled, so they put us off the list of volunteers. Furthermore, the event started late: we arrived in time before eight thirty but no one was there until nine. While looking around for the event, we stumbled into a peopled building across the street, which was hosting an event for domestic violence. Community Housing Hub arrived later, around nine something, and that’s when we walked back to the Blackshear Elementary school after helping out at the other place and volunteered for this givepulse event.
