    Balasia @ Rutgers Day 2019

Volunteering at Rutgers Day 2019 was so much fun! I represented the School of Criminal Justice for two hours and met so many people. I got to meet several incoming freshmen like myself, students who already attend the university and staff! Volunteering at the SCJ booth gave me the opportunity to really experience the university's school spirit while doing what I enjoy the most: Volunteering and meeting new people. All in all, it was such an amazing day. The people whom I worked alongside were very energetic and compassionate. I am so excited for Rutgers Day 2020!

Balasia @ Lets Talk About It: Girls Edition

"Lets Talk About It: Girls Edition," (held by DMHS Interact club) was so much fun and a complete success! There’s nothing better than gathering with a group of like-minded individuals on a Friday night! This group of beautiful women is my home, my sisters, my friends and my family. I always learn so much from our sessions. From how essential self love is to how important it is to take a break to just breathe and assess situations, to the important factors in making my final college decision. For me, going in to our sessions is all about what information and guidance that I can offer to my sisters. However, coming out of our Girls Talk sessions, I always feel 10x more comfortable with myself and more sure of my goals and passions to guide and inspire other young individuals to be the best version of themselves!

Let’s continue to grow, gather, gain and generate positivity! We are the future, we are the change, so let’s dream it and achieve it! -Balasia McNeil

    10th Biannual Community Engagement Day

I really enjoyed my experience giving back to the community! I met so many amazing people who are determined to be apart of the movement of change and better the city of Newark. It felt amazing to be surrounded by so many like minded individuals who were working hard on a Saturday morning. The organization that I worked with is called "The United Vailsburg Services Organization." They are working on achieving something great! Their mission is to create a stable and compassionate community in the Vailsburg neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. To do so, they provide youth and children services, senior services, housing development and community outreach opportunities. Working with this organization for an entire day was a great pleasure. I got to see first hand that I do not stand alone as a person who is eager to be a part of the solution.

    Balasia @ Interact Club 2018-2019

Inspired by a community service project that I participated in with students from Rutgers University, Newark, I decided to implement a similar project for students within my school community to take part in. I created, managed and participated in a clothes drive and a food drive for the homeless in Paterson, New Jersey. My club and I raised about $250 to purchase 100 burgers, waters, chips and oranges, and create personal lunch bags for each meal. We decorated the lunch bags with vibrant colors, designs and quotes, such as, “You Matter,” “You Deserve This,” and “You are loved.” We donated the clothes and half of the lunch bags to a shelter named Good Shepherd Mission Inc. and personally handed out the other half on the streets of Paterson, New Jersey.

This was such a heartwarming and enlightening experience, as I was able to converse with the people who received lunch bags. I received the opportunity to learn about their life, how they manage surviving on a daily basis and even advice that will stick by me for the rest of my life. One of the most important messages that I got out of the opportunity to give back to the community of Paterson, New Jersey is that this world that we live in needs more peacemakers, healers and lovers, and my passion to help others learn the importance of this and truly embody "Service Above Self", runs deep. I learned that we have to break the "generation curses" and be the change, the one who breaks it.
