I learned a lot during this service from basic knowledge about art therapy, its background and history, to how to develop and edit tools, as well as analyze the data of our survey and writing up the final report.

Reflection for Class
I think that one of the biggest takeaways or moments of realization is the understanding I now have of how crucial it is and the difficulty involved in getting people to invest in an issue. Because so much of our project involved things related to research, social media, and events all with the purpose of garnering people’s attention to the issue of childcare access, I have a greater appreciation and understanding of the ground level work it takes to build a campaign with devoted supporters. Before my service learning with Under 3 DC, I did not realize how much time and effort went into coalition building and simply spreading awareness of the issue in hopes of reaching supporters. I feel like in our current social and political climate, people are often unwilling to converse with the opposing side, quickly moving on to finding those who already share the same beliefs. However, my time with Under 3 DC has shown me the importance of taking the time to try and reach everyone, for affordable and universal childcare will not succeed if we only depend on parents and childcare providers for support.
As far as my ability to contribute to the public understanding of the childcare issue, I think that I am well equipped to talk about the inequalities facing children, childcare providers, and parents in the Washington DC area. I would be able to talk about why childcare is important to the economy, who is most affected by inaccessible childcare, and the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the sector. I also feel that I would be able to talk about childcare from an intersectionality perspective based on what I have learned in class and through the project, such as how women are most affected by childcare access and the impacts of race, class, and education, which influences the need for an increased child care budget. Through this I believe that I also have a better understanding of how to narrow down important points regarding childcare to make them both digestible and eye-catching, for in the Tweets and graphics we worked on there was limited space to talk about childcare, meaning that I had to be well informed but also able to describe the issue in simple terms. I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn from Under 3 DC, and it has likewise made me more of an advocate for childcare issues in DC.

Great reflection. I appreciated that in your presentation, you acknowledged that you performed "smaller" tasks to allow staff to focus on bigger challenges. But please remember that no matter how big or small the task, all community service work is important. The key is working toward the mission, together as an organization.
