Kyle @ A Woman's Place is a women's and family domestic abuse shelter in Doylestown, PA

I spent a day at the shelter carrying boxes of food, organizing donations in the shelter pantry, and meeting a new client (a survivor, and now a guest of AWP). Having volunteered with A Woman's Place regularly throughout high school, I learned of the economic and social inequities that can put a woman and her family in desperate circumstances when domestic violence or abandonment strikes. Serving with the organization again this winter reminded me of the ways that critical services like shelters survive solely on the charitable donations of community members -- without municipal and government-organized shelters and assistance programs, it's easy for women and children to remain in dangerous situations simply because they lack the economic autonomy and legal representation to escape.

School Without Walls - Senior Paper Feedback

I thoroughly edited and left essay writing advice on two senior papers, one regarding transgender rights in the U.S. and the other regarding portrayal of Hispanic people in U.S. media. The two papers differed greatly in the style of writing, quality of research, and level of organizational and argumentative cohesion. Although I dedicated a whole evening to both students, I spent much more time editing the latter paper to make sure that the writer had ample explanations of my edits along with sample sentences and structures to employ in her future writing samples.

Kyle @ Elbow Lane Day Camp - A community day camp and preschool serving underpiviliged students

In the part I worked at Elbow Lane as a summer camp counselor, and this year I returned to help out in the community preschool over the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. The preschool is mostly subsidized by the summer camp revenues, meaning that the preschool students get scholarships according to family need. I helped in person, both caring for the students alongside limited staff members and managing COVID-19-related screenings to ensure that the children, teachers, and their families remained healthy and safe. This year has of course been difficult for the school; since the camp operated at only partial capacity, the revenues that typically subsidize the preschool were lacking. Elbow Lane's director, Adrian, brought in volunteers when possible to assist the teachers and tend to the children's needs so their parents could still have affordable childcare while working essential jobs.
