Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Resource Center

My final week at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center was bittersweet! I'm so sad to leave but am grateful for all the lessons and skills it has taught me. This week, I finished my client data entry and professional development readings. I also helped create Sickle Cell Awareness event-participant bags and assisted in and took photos of the weekly cooking series called "Eating Smart, Being Active." I really enjoyed working with members from the Florida Department of Health throughout this series and have learned a lot about health, nutrition, and exercise. This experience has been amazing I hope to continue working with the resource center in the future. It has also inspired me to want to prefer nonprofit work as part of my career and volunteer for AmeriCorps or Peace Corps after I graduate!

Interning at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center has allowed me to learn and experience many types of valuable service events and lessons. Last weekend, I supported and assisted the center at the DeLand Juneteenth event, where we had a table for Sickle Cell Awareness. I learned a lot about the true meaning and value of Juneteenth by visiting some of the different tables and performances, and assisted the center by helping pack up after the event and recording a speaker who attended with us. Tuesday, I attended a city mural meeting for the planning of the African-American heritage mural downtown. I listened and took detailed notes for my supervisor. On Wednesday, I assisted in the center's weekly cooking class through the Florida Department of Health called "Eating Smart, Being Active." This week's theme was how we can incorporate whole grains into our diets, so we made a whole-grain trail mix for participants. I also participated in the brief exercise instruction to help motivate participants and documented the event for the center's newsletter through photography. This week's exercise was cardio through dance, which I really enjoyed. Additionally, I continued client data entry and professional development readings. I also worked on editing our client database to make it more organized and visually appealing.

I had another great week working at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center! This week, I worked on more client data entry and professional development readings. I also conducted some participant demographic research and recording. Additionally, I helped execute and photograph the center's weekly cooking class through the Florida Department of Health and observed the center's Backpack Giveaway planning meeting, which had representatives from many local organizations. Today, I was happy to get some more experience checking clients in to assist Ms. Wanda, a valued and experienced employee at the center. I was also able to finalize and send in most of my January Art Series research and planning to my supervisor, Taylor. Overall, this was a very productive, enjoyable week!

I had another great week interning at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Community Resource Center. This week, I worked on a lot of client data entry to help create a database that will be used to facilitate contact and keep track of people who come to the center. I also assisted in and took photos of the Health Department's weekly cooking class at the center. This week, the instructors explained the importance of checking nutrition labels and what to look out for. They also shared convenient ways to grocery shop and led a short exercise class for participants. They instructed the audience on how to make the popular breakfast food and snack, avocado toast. I assisted in preparing and serving food when I wasn't busy taking photos. I also participated in the weekly "Walking Wednesday," adjusted the community engagement survey I created, and continued my professional development readings. The readings were focused on different leadership and personality types, which are useful to know when working in team-based settings. I took the 16 Personalities Test and evaluated my Clifton Strength's to share with my supervisor, Taylor, and fellow intern, Zel, at our team meeting today. At our meeting, we discussed the readings as well as our different personalities and leadership styles. We also discussed some goals and tasks to work on at the center.

I had another amazing week interning at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center! This week, I created a flyer for the Coat Drive, which will be held in a few months. I also assisted the health department in its weekly cooking class. This week's class involved making smoothies (instructing the audience how to do so and sharing recipes), and exercise through dancing. I helped document the event by taking photos. Additionally, I assisted in organizing and executing the center's butterfly release for sickle cell awareness and took photographs to help document the event. There was a good turn out for the event, as we had many attendees. I really valued this event because I believe there needs to be more education about sickle cell. For the last day of the week, I worked on sharing my photography from the week's events and also worked on client data entry. Overall, it was a very busy, but very rewarding week!

My third week at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Center was filled with activity. I observed a city meeting about murals for DeLand's African American community history and Sickle Cell awareness. I also helped facilitate and document the Department of Health's first day of its cooking series. Representatives from the department, Pat and Jill, introduced the series about nutrition and taught knife-safety skills as well as some brief exercise instruction. I also participated in the center's weekly "Walking Wednesday" event. Additionally, I collaborated with Zel (another intern at the center), to create an interview guide for community members who receive resume coaching. I also continued planning the January Art Series and worked on creating a flyer for the coat drive. Today, I met with my supervisor, Taylor, for a one-on-one meeting in which we discussed projects and some professional development goals. Overall, I am really enjoying my time here!

My second week at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center was great! I began researching and planning for the center's January Art Series and designed some flyer ideas on Canva. I also assisted in executing a gardening event lead by the Florida Department of Health (and documented it through photos) and participated in the center's Walking Wednesday event. Today, I met with my supervisor, Taylor to reflect on our May Mental Health Week and discuss Art-Week Ideas. I also had a meeting with Taylor and my fellow intern, Zel, to discuss some professional goals we could work on. I proposed working on confidence in the workplace, team communication, and collaborative work.

My first week working at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center was a great experience. My supervisor, Taylor, worked to show me around and get acquainted with the members, workers, facility, and work expectations. We established goals for the internship and I was able to begin some administrative work. More specifically, I learned how to do data entry for clients in a shared Excel sheet with Zel, another Stetson student interning at the center. I was also able to lead a series of mental health awareness events for the center's May Mental Health Week that I planned and organized throughout the spring semester. I created presentations and discussion questions for a small group of community members. Each day was allocated to a different topic, which included Anxiety & Self-Care, Depression & Preventative Methods, Bipolar Disorder- Symptoms & Treatment, Substance Abuse- Risk Factors & Treatment, Eating Disorders- Causes, Signs, & Treatment. Unfortunately, due to a loss in the family, I was unable to lead the last event of the series, but I really enjoyed presenting about the others. The audience was really engaged and it was inspiring to hear some of the stories they shared related to these topics. I think the ability to be vulnerable and talk about sensitive topics like these with others helps build friendships and community, which serves one of the missions of the resource center as a whole. I am honored I was able to contribute to this and look forward to planning and leading events like this in the future.
