This Sunday I helped volunteer at a Bernie Sanders rally taking place at the Gatsby downtown. I was chosen to cheer on others and seek out volunteers to sign up for other Bernie events in Austin and phone bank callers. This was a very rewarding experience meeting other supporters and the live music was a plus! It also felt nice to be politically active as I volunteered.

With finals coming up, I took time out of my weekend to tutor some students in Portuguese. Just to be clear- I volunteered for this position, so no money was exchanged! We started at about noon and went until about 2:45.

This was my first time tutoring, and it was a rewarding experience helping a fellow longhorn.

This weekend I participated in DASH in my hometown. DASH stands for delivering and service to the homebound. After the 10 a.m. church service, fellow volunteers and I picked up boxed meals and delivered them to the doors of those who cannot leave their homes. It was so comforting to see the smiles of those who were receiving a warm meal from a young person!

In late October, I participated in DASH in my hometown. DASH stands for delivering and service to the homebound. It is something I have been participating in since I was in high school but my parents like to bring me along when I visit back home for the weekend. After 10 a.m. mass, fellow volunteers and I picked up meals and delivered them to those who cannot leave their homes.

It was so great to feel and see the appreciation from those who were receiving a hot meal from us!!

On Friday night I worked with the Ally Coalition to help create safe places for LGBTQ spaces & homelessness visibility! Fellow volunteer Max and I worked with the band - the Mowgli's - on the #FORTYPERCENT Campaign at their show at The Parish in downtown Austin. This campaign highlights the disproportionately high number of homeless youths that identify as LGBTQ. By creating Safe
Spaces at shows and encouraging fans to bring that sensibility home with them, what happens on the Mowgli's Tour can be part of a chain reaction of safe space conversations across the country.

The evening began at 6 p.m. with hanging posters and other safe space messaging all around the venue. Our most important duty was to explain the #FORTYPERCENT campaign, encourage fans to have their pictures taken with the large pop-up banner, and to share the pictures on social media with the hashtag. We did this through out the rest of the night until midnight.

It was an amazing experience to help spread awareness for such a powerful cause. Being engaged with band members/fans (plus seeing free live music was a also a win) !

On Saturday morning I was awake bright and early to help set up the starting/finish line for Nike's annual Longhorn Run. at 5:30 a.m. fellow volunteers and I unfolded and hung up Nike tarps across the barriers lining 21st street. We also filled water bottles for the runners. When the race began we cheered on the participants. It was a great hands on experience where I was able to be physically active. Contributing to something that is bigger than myself is always refreshing!

My ULN group and I bought food, water, socks, face wipes, cough drops, etc. and walked around the city offering them to those in need. The homeless community showed much interest in talking to us youth.
