Today I was placed on a Surgical floor and got to work with a variety of patients. One patient was discharged and very excited to go home. I got to take out an IV and catheter and work with a patient who was very confused after a head injury. I also worked with some families on providing them information and calming their nerves while they were dealing with a loved one in the hospital. I got to work with a lot of really great nurses who had incredibly positive attitudes and who I was able to learn a lot from.
We participated in orientation today. This included going to our clinical site and finding our way around the units. We also talked about what is to be expected of us this coming semester. The final piece of orientation was a presentation by an employee of the hospital about new safety procedures that are being implemented to reduce med errors and adverse events due to unsafe practices.
