This week, the patient that I took care of could only speak Tagalog, which is my first language. He had plenty of health complications and lacked patient teaching due to the lack of nurse-patient interaction. As a nursing student, it was my honor to answer his questions. He had no family present in the room, and felt lonely most of the time. I made sure that he was not being neglected and we spent time talking about his concerns. Therapeutic communication was a big part of this week, as well as patience.
It's so very fine that you were paired with this patient and could use your Tagalog to really help him. That's moving. I also hear that you noticed his isolation, his loneliness. Your desire to be present for this patient in a number of ways is clear. And I hope you keep the attitude that "it was my honor" to serve this patient even after you've graduated and are no longer a nursing student.
