Today, I attended a teach-in about the current conflict in Palestine-Israel with an array of distinguished scholars and community leaders that provided historical, legal, and ethical analyses of the current conflict. I learned so much and my takeaways are provided in the notes attached here.

Today, we learned the ins and outs of volunteering at the shelter. We went around the shelter a few times to get comfortable with the environment and then we went over how to do the dishes, how to organize laundry, how to make treats and busy boxes, and how to sort donations.

Today, our training session covered the behaviors cats will exhibit under certain stressors and what those stressors may be. We also learned how important it is to understand varying cat body language through ears, eyes, whiskers, and body shape. An exposed belly displays trust, but does not warrant being pet. A "halloween" cat is fearful and should be left alone. Much more information is provided in the notes I took from the session but it was a great time because I've had a hard time understanding cat body language since I am more familiar with dogs.

Today, we learned about the tasks we will need to complete when we first start volunteering at the shelter. This includes laundry, donation sorting, making treats for the animals, and doing dishes. We also discussed the importance of recognizing testing behaviors in potential adopters among other safety precautions.

Today was lots of fun! I headed to the pantry earlier because I had several items from home to donate so I stocked those up and also organized the pantry to make it more accessible to those visiting. Today, Annie and I utilized our Spanish skills to accommodate the bilingual community in the area. We collected data for the Capitol Food Bank Agency by asking questions in Spanish regarding the form. We had many people come today since it was the weekend before Thanksgiving. I am excited for the upcoming weeks because I will be engaging further with the community!!

Today, we participated in a training session to prepare us for our interaction with dogs at the shelter. We learned how to distinguish between happy, calm, concerned, offensive, and defensive dogs by deciphering bodily expressions (ears, nose, eyes, body distribution, paws, etc.).

This meeting intended to educate those wanting to volunteer at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. It explained the different ways in which we can contribute, how often we should volunteer, and how to work with specific animals if we wish to do so. This was the first required step in being able to volunteer at the Welfare League.

Today, I arrived earlier than the initial time listed on Pulse since the delivery for this month's pantry goods was delivered. We unpacked and organized canned goods, flour, vegetable oil, and also handed out fresh fruits and veggies donated to the pantry by the school cafeteria. I had a great time and am looking forward to next week's distribution.
