Silvopasture Workshop + Oak Savanna Restoration | Living Song Farm, Howard Lake

Thursday, October 14th, 2021 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm (CT)

About

Join Great River Greening, University of Minnesota Extension, and the Sustainable Farming Association for a hands-on day of learning. The event will take place from 2-6 p.m. Starting with a program overview and moving into rotations focusing on different topics and restoration activities. If you are unable to join us at 2 p.m., stop by when you can and we will happily plug you into a rotation. Please let us know when to expect you in the "notes" field during registration.

Together farmers, scientists, and natural resource professionals will lead stations where participants will learn more about silvopasture techniques (the integration of trees and grazing livestock on the same landscape), oak savanna restoration, and more at Living Song Farm in Howard Lake. The three stations will include tree planting, prairie seeding, and buckthorn pulling/hauling. Duration at each station will vary, but the most time will likely be spent on clearing buckthorn.

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required.

Please note: The walk from the parking area to the work area will be about a half-mile walk. Half of the walk will be along a gravel road, with the other half through an open field with slight incline.

We will have light snacks and extra water available, however, please bring your own reusable water bottle and any additional snacks or lunch items you may need. There will be a portable sanitation unit on site.

Once you have registered via GivePulse, organizers from Great River Greening will approve your registration and you will receive confirmation. You will continue to receive event reminders as the event nears. If you have further questions, please contact Amy at volunteer@greatrivergreening.org. If the event has reached capacity, please add your name to the waitlist and you will be automatically registered if space becomes available.

If you are a minor registering yourself, you will need to provide an email address in the "Linked Survey" box so we can send a Youth Liability Waiver to your parent or guardian. If you are an adult bringing a minor, you can add them as an attendee and simply check the "Youth Waiver" box upon registering. If you are an adult registering yourself and another adult, you will need to enter their unique email address to the Attendee registration, so they can confirm their registration and electronically sign their own waivers.

When registering, you will be able to indicate if you are available to help with check-in/registration or parking. Event support roles will arrive early to receive additional instruction. After most volunteers have parked and checked in, you will be able to participate in the event. We will only need a handful of volunteers for each role. Amy will contact you and confirm your event support role prior to the event.
