Big City Mountaineers

About

Big City Mountaineers delivers its life-changing youth programs in 4 major ubran regions throughout the country (Denver-Metro, San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, and the Midwest - Chicago and Minneapolis). Taking place primarily in the summer months, its core program is a week-long, single-gender backpacking or canoeing expedition with a 1:1 ratio of 5 teens to 4 or 5 adults. Working with community-based youth agencies and caring adults who act as mentors in the field, our professionally guided programs improve integrity, self-esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills. BCM results show that youth return to their urban homes with the motivation and purpose to make positive changes in their lives including staying in school and avoiding drugs and delinquency.

In 2011, Big City Mountaineers delivered single-day, overnight and weeklong programs throughout its four regions. Over 300 volunteers logged more than 23,000 hours in the field, and in partnership with two-dozen youth agencies, changed the lives and instilled critical life skills in nearly 1,000 under-served young people.

In 2012, Big City Mountaineers hopes to nearly double the number of young people they serve through their mentoring expeditions.

Mission: The mission of Big City Mountaineers is to instills critical life skills in under-served urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions.
