Abigayle @ Mid South Food Bank

I participated in boxing food for the Mid South Food Bank. These boxes are given to those without food or lower-economic populations. My direct service benefited members of the broader community by giving someone without basic needs the needs to live. There are people who cannot afford a meal or have the accommodations to go to a grocery store and this will help meet those needs. There were 850 boxes made that day. I developed a better understanding of poverty that is all around us and it made me reflect on how blessed I am to be able to have 3 meals a day and have the proper needs for every day life and it made me realize that the things that I sometimes find myself complaining about are really not even problems and I need to be more grateful for the things that I have and the opportunities that I have. I worked as a part of a team during my service and I think that was a positive impact on my experience because I got to meet others but also I got to work with some of my sorority sisters which made it a little less intimidating. I had a lot of fun working with this team and we got to make a lot of boxes for these people in need. I plan to volunteer again with this organization. I had a great time and I really enjoyed hearing about their mission and the people that are impacted from their volunteering.

Abigayle @ Le Bonheur Patient Cards

I was able to write sweet cards for the patients at Le Bonheur. I was able to bring them up to the hospital. The patients were overjoyed by the sweet encouraging and funny notes that put a smile on their face and brightened their day while they have been at the hospital. I learned that sometimes it is the smaller things that make a big impact. These kids would rather be at home and playing with friends, but instead they are in the hospital, which can be scary. This act of kindness really made a difference in some of their days and I hope that it encouraged them to stay positive and that they are brave and strong! I continue to volunteer at Le Bonheur because it is something that is so much bigger than myself and I enjoy getting to interact with patients and families and hear their stories and just be the person they can lean on. My service contributed to the overall mission of the organization because they strive to advocate for patients and give compassionate care and by participating in events like this it only helps to benefit them.

Abigayle @ Le Bonheur Pumpkin Run 5K

I ran in the 5k pumpkin run for Le Bonheur. This event benefited the patients and families at Le Bonheur. The hosts were so happy that we were participating in this event to raise money for Le Bonheur and participate in the run. I learned that the community that I served, Le Bonheur, is so grateful for this event because participating in this event helped save a child's life. I worked as a team during this event. We were able to create a Phi Mu running team and although a lot of us were not runners we were able to make it to the finish line and cheer on one another. It was so much fun. This event is something that I value so close to my heart. Working at Le Bonheur has been a dream of mine since I was little and I have been able to see patients have a chance at life that many years ago might not been able to have because of the advancement of medicine and events like these. These children and families are so grateful to have such a strong and supportive community.

Abigayle @ LeBonheur goodie bags for nurses

Phi Mu was able to make goodie bags for the nurses at Le Bonheur. The nurses were so thankful to recieve these because they work so hard to provide the best care for these children. Allison Smith, the volunteer coordinator, is so helpful with volunteering and service opportunities at Le Bonheur. I have gotten to collaborate with her for the past year and she is always so helpful with ways to be an active volunteer in their community. I learned that sometimes the nurses care gets overlooked and under-appreciated, but if it was not for their dedication and compassionate care these patients would not be where they are today. We wanted to give them a huge thank you for all they do and ensure that it does not go unnoticed throughout our community. Personally, being a nursing student and becoming a nurse in May, I have seen first-hand the physical, mental and emotional stress that this job has on nurses lives. It is the most rewarding job, but it is extremely hard to witness and experience patients dying, suffering from illness, etc. I think that the most important thing to do is to have a strong support system and a strong community to lean on and be able to talk to. These little acts of kindness can really brighten someones day, especially our healthcare workers.

    Spring Festival of Flowers

I helped with the planting flowers station with the kids from different schools. It was so fun to teach them about planting flowers and how to grow them at home.
