About

Martin Luther King Day of Service: The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action to build the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter century.

Making time to volunteer for MLK Day of Service is a great way to engage with your community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King. Whether you plan on cleaning up a public space, mentoring a young person, or assisting those who are food insecure, what you do makes a world of difference.

Organizational Information:  At The Palouse Discovery Science Center, students are able to go and explore scientific phenomena and enjoy special projects to learn about science and math!

Opportunity Description:  Student volunteers will assist with Palouse Discovery Science Center helping both inside and outside with cleaning and/or projects and with upkeep.

Days/Times:  Transportation will be provided. Please meet at CUB L45 at 10AM to meet with your group. We plan to return to campus around 2 PM.

Requirements: Service hours are allocated based on amount of direct service participation and do not include meeting time and transportation to/from the service site. Students should plan to receive 2.5 hours of service for this project. Please dress appropriately for weather. Closed toed shoes required. All students are advised to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing according to weather. Masks and social distancing are a requirement for participation.

COVID: All WSU students indoors must wear a mask. Students using CCE transportation must wear a mask at all times while in the vehicles. The community partner may also require masks at their facilities OR proof of vaccination status.

Currently during the pandemic, we will be allowing students to drive themselves to CCE Led projects if they wish to maintain greater distancing. If students wish to drive themselves to the event, please email cce.projects@wsu.edu at least 24 hours before the event.

Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic and for the safety of all of our students and partners, CCE-Led projects may be cancelled up until the project time. If the project is cancelled, we will notify you as soon as we are able in a timely manner.

Cancellation Policy: Participants can unregister on GivePulse up to 24 hours before the scheduled project start time. Please let CCE staff know if you are unable to participate if it is within 24 hours of the project meeting time. The CCE has a strict No Show Policy. After 2 No Shows students will be unable to participate in CCE-led Projects for the rest of the semester

The CCE strives to sponsor activities that are accessible to all students. If you need accommodations to fully access the activities offered through the Center for Civic Engagement, please contact Sandra Kelly, at (509)-335-4609 or sandra.kelly1@wsu.edu at least one week prior to the activity.
