2. Pillager Point Restoration | Pillager

Thursday, May 19th, 2022 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm (CT)

About

Join Great River Greening for the first volunteer restoration event at Pillager Point! Pillager Point offers stunning views of the Crow Wing River. These views will be significantly improved after buckthorn clearing this winter. Learn more about the restoration work taking place and see the transition. At this evening event, volunteers will be welcome to help with the restoration work focusing on buckthorn clearing, hand-seeding, and planting native grass and forb plugs. Our long-term restoration work will not only improve the views but also help stabilize the soil reducing runoff and in turn improve water quality.

Last fall, we worked with a team of archeologists to assess this site for historical context and found many exciting fragments and specimens indicating this was a site of cultural significance. The area had been used by Native American peoples dating as far back as 500 to 900 years ago. We discovered evidence of tool making, cooking, and other clues to daily life. The people who once camped at this location had either traveled or traded with others throughout the Upper Midwest to obtain high-quality stone raw materials from as far away as western North Dakota to use in the making of knives and scrapers. The archeologists suggested this location may be an ideal candidate to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required. The start time is flexible, please join when you are able!

We will have light snacks and extra water available, however, please bring your own reusable water bottle and any additional snacks you may need.

Once you have registered via GivePulse, organizers from Great River Greening will approve your registration and you will receive confirmation. You will continue to receive event reminders as the event nears. If you have further questions, please contact Amy at volunteer@greatrivergreening.org. If the event has reached capacity, please add your name to the waitlist and you will be automatically registered if space becomes available.

If you are a minor registering yourself, you will need to provide an email address in the "Linked Survey" box so we can send a Youth Liability Waiver to your parent or guardian. If you are an adult bringing a minor, you can add them as an attendee and simply check the "Youth Waiver" box upon registering. If you are an adult registering yourself and another adult, you will need to enter their unique email address to the Attendee registration, so they can confirm their registration and electronically sign their own waivers.

When registering, you will be able to indicate if you are available to help with check-in/registration or parking. Event support roles will arrive early to receive additional instruction. After most volunteers have parked and checked in, you will be able to join a planting unit as well. We will only need a handful of volunteers for each role. Amy will contact you and confirm your event support role prior to the event.
