Founded in 1991, Art From the Streets (AFTS) began with a simple but powerful idea: many people experiencing homelessness in Austin are talented artists who lack access to materials, space, and opportunities to share their work. What started with basic art supplies and encouragement has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit providing free studio access, professional development, and income-earning opportunities through art.
For more than 30 years, AFTS has offered a safe, welcoming, and affirming creative community where artists experiencing homelessness can create, connect, and build confidence. Through studio sessions, outreach workshops, exhibitions, and public art sales, artists are supported not only as creatives, but as individuals with voices, stories, and potential.
Creativity can be a powerful pathway to healing, dignity, and stability. AFTS artists earn 95% of the proceeds from their artwork sales, creating meaningful income and economic independence. Every volunteer hour helps remove barriers to participation—ensuring artists have consistent access to materials, mentorship, and a supportive environment where they are respected and valued.

Who Can Volunteer
No art experience is required—just compassion, patience, and a willingness to learn. We welcome individuals, groups, and first-time volunteers who are interested in supporting artists and being part of a creative, community-centered environment.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
