Post-Microburst Tree Replanting Day!

Friends of Wharton Square is looking for volunteers to plant 20 saplings at the park at 10am on Sat Nov. 7th!
At around 3pm on July 11th, South Philadelphia was hit by two Microburst storm events in quick succession, with straight line winds reaching 60-70 miles an hour. This storm devastated Wharton Square Park, killing or mortally wounding 20 of 79 of our trees. Between the storm and removal of damaged trees, Wharton Square Park lost ~30% of the total park canopy, losing mature trees and shade that will take many decades to replace. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and a grant from the Philly Tree Coalition, recovery starts on November 7th. Teams of volunteers will plant, water and protect 20 trees placed thoughtfully and strategically throughout the park.Trees are sourced from the esteemed Tree Authority Nursery in Perkasie, and the species selected were thoroughly researched, discussed, and selected for drought tolerance, wind resistance, disease resistance, beauty, and many other factors.
We are putting out a call for volunteers of all ages and abilities for our planting day on Saturday November 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are not available on that day or want to find ways to get more involved, we are also looking for volunteers interested in helping to water the saplings throughout their first few years of life. In addition, we are looking for donations of money or volunteer day refreshments for those interested in giving to this good cause.
This planting day has been put together with assistance and permission from Parks and Rec, Pa One Call system, and Friends of Wharton Square. Volunteers for this project came together from local organizations including Point Breeze Tree Tenders, Master Watershed Stewards, and PHS.
