Every January, ECHO coordinates the Austin/Travis County Point-in-Time Count of the unsheltered homeless population. The count provides valuable information on the location and needs of those individuals in our community who experience street homelessness, and is used to measure our progress toward ending homelessness.
The next count is coming up on January 24th, 2015, and ECHO needs your help to do it! The Austin/Travis County Point in Time (PIT) Count is part of the national effort to eliminate street homelessness spearheaded by the federal Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA). These counts are used to evaluate our strategies to overcome street homelessness and assists in the development of new housing resources. By knowing who is on the street, where they are, and what they need, ECHO and its partner agencies can most effectively target services to those that need them the most.
To conduct the Point in Time Count, teams of volunteers canvass the streets, parks, and camps, and administer a short survey to collect important demographic information.
This year’s count takes place on the night of January 23rd/24th, 2014 from 3am to 8am, and we need more than 500 volunteers!!! Tell your friends and family about it! All volunteers must be at least 18 years old or 16-17 years old accompanied by an adult.
Volunteers will sign-up for one of 3 count shifts:
Shift 1: Saturday, January 24th from 5-8 am (Furthest areas of Travis County)
Shift 2: Saturday, January 24th from 5-8 am (Suburban areas)Shift 3: Saturday, January 24th from 3-7 am (Downtown/Central Austin)
