My mother is a tutor at a local elementary school in San Antonio, Texas. She reinforces simple mathematical concepts and reading strategies to children having a problem in these subjects. Occasionally, she asks me to tag along. Realizing I was short an hour, I tagged along with her earlier this morning and stayed there for a few hours helping her organize her room, but dedicating about half an hour to sitting at a roundabout table teaching her students some basic arithmetic. In my opinion, teaching children how to read and solve basic math problems is a joy in my world, as it brings me happiness to be able to say I promoted an education. The school is named Hatchett Elementary School, and it is located on 10700 Ingram Rd, San Antonio, TX 78245.

This volunteering experience was the same as the last, giving out warm meals early in the morning through the Feed my People program. This second time around was much more memorable as I was able to play a chess game with a homeless man by the name of Kyle, who went on to completely destroy me. I was able to learn a few things after our game, as he went on to reveal he was an ex-tournament player in his younger years. After the early cold morning, I left reminiscing on the events and the chats that I had. The homeless and people in poverty have a negative stance in too many people's eyes, but having the opportunity to make a small difference in their life (in this case a warm breakfast meal) truly changes our outlook.
My roommate and I woke up at around 4:30AM to volunteer at the Feed my People program hosted by the Foundation For The Homeless at the First United Methodist Church's Family Life Center. We walked from our house to the church and had a great (and sleepy) time giving out warm meals for the homeless. It's always an incredibly eye-opening experience to give back to the people less fortunate.
My fraternity (Delta Epsilon Mu) had reserved a volunteering shift at the Austin Animal Center for this past Saturday (4/30/2016). The event was titled Paws for Effect, where we volunteered in safely handling the animals in need of medical, dietary, or social factors. We arrived there at about 8:30 am, but did not start our shift until 9:00 am. I had forgotten to take an allergy pill, and I'm somewhat allergic to cat hair, so I didn't have a grand time. The Austin Animal Center is located at A, 7201 Levander Loop, Austin, TX 78702.
Collaboratively signed up with a few fraternity brothers to volunteer with HOSA members at the Austin State Hospital. We teamed up to give out the resident children dinner and decorated cookies. Signed up through Delta Epsilon Mu, but was gaining the points for ULN '18 since my volunteer points for DEM are complete. We met up at 6:00 p.m at 110 Guadalupe St., Austin, TX 78751 and were finished with the event by 8:00 p.m.
Signed up to volunteer for the organization known as Donuts for the Blind. In the organization, we set up stand at a busy student intersection and vend donuts, coffee, bagels, etc. All earnings go directly towards the 20/20/20 organization, whose goal is to restore 20/20 vision to 20 million blind children and adults around the world.
Volunteered with a dear friend of mine at the Feed My People program established by Foundation for the Homeless. Arrived at approximately 4:50 am and worked until 7:00 am. We met at the First United Methodist Church at the intersection of Lavaca and W 17th st.
Volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas here in Austin, Texas. Having volunteered at the food bank in San Antonio over the summer, I decided to give the one in Austin a shot. I have to say, it was a lot more of a community within the instance. The individuals I met while volunteering were some of the most genuine people I have come to encounter.
Was in charge of making quesadilla's for the organization. They titled me the "chef" in charge. Was meant to fundraise for the organization. Delta Epsilon My is the sigma chapter pre-health fraternity located at the University of Texas at Austin.
Went around and gave various little treats with my mentor group in order to calm the nerves of the local students studying for their respective midterms ("hell week"). We all purchased candy, made treats, and then decided to hand them out at various locations which include the PCL, the Union, and the SAC.
