I created uplifting cards for children battling cancer through Letters of Love BGSU. By performing this service, it allows me to give back to children, nationwide, that may need a dose of happiness. I value making other people smile, so being able to do that for children and their families who are going though hard times is important to me. Working with the Letters of Love organization on campus and other Kappa Delta sisters was encouraging for me since we were all brought together for one common purpose. In the future, I hope to be able to continue fostering this relationship with the LOL organization to support the non profit work that they are doing. If I were to do this again, I would allow myself more time to create even more cards.

This day was our Summer Link Leader Retreat. We discussed the importance of inclusive language, identities, and conflict resolution methods. These were all important leadership development techniques that we will need to properly execute our roles as Link Leaders. We got to get to know ourselves, our Link Pairs, and the other leaders around us. It was also nice to get a head start on planning the events and sessions. I am very excited to continue preparing for the next cohort of scholars.

    Falcon Food Pantry

This semester, I was an Intern at the Falcon Food Pantry. I spent an hour and a half each Thursday greeting guests, stocking shelves, creating social media posts, and more. It was very eye opening to see the behind the scenes work of a food pantry. I did not know just how many students on campus struggled with food insecurity before this experience. There are so many international students and young people who cannot afford to eat regularly. I am glad that I was able to have the opportunity this semester to help people learn about the pantry and feel comfortable coming in when they are struggling. Food insecurity does not have one look or one way of affecting people. I think that this is an important topic to learn about, especially since I will be going into a food related field. I cannot assume that everyone has the same access to food at all times. It has been very inspiring to see how the FFP is connected to organizations on campus as well as off campus such as Feeding America, the Toledo Food Bank, Brown Bag Food Project, BGSU Dining, and more. The pantry incorporates sustainability, nutrition, marketing, policies, and many other interdisciplinary fields. I hope to continue working with the pantry in the future and creating a more long lasting project that can impact the community in a greater way.

Assisting BGSU Polling Location with BGSU Votes

During this volunteer shift, I helped make sure that voters were registered to vote at this polling location and troubleshoot if they were not. I helped them utilize the voter search website to check their registration. It was very inspiring to see the amount of young adults coming to vote. A lot of them had to cast provisional ballots because they were still registered at their home locations. Provisional ballots were not something that I was aware existed and many students didn't either. I think it would be important to remind/let students know that they can change their address to on campus during the school year and that they can change it back to their home address whenever they need to online. That way we can make sure that all voter ballots can be counted and not have to risk the ballot being thrown out or not counting. Overall, it was a very inviting and informative experience and I enjoyed being able to be a part of helping the election process run smoothly. I was able to feel involved and civically engaged even though I am unable to vote.

    BGSU Votes Voter Registration Tabling

I volunteered at the BG Votes' Voter Registration Table for the second time. No one came by the booth while I was there, but there were also lots of other events/organizations in the Union Oval that may have distracted our demographic. We asked people as they walked by if they were registered to vote and almost all of them said yes. My hope is that the lack of registrations during my shift was caused by so many people already being registered. These tabling events are important, but I wonder if there were more events/advertisements for or with BG Votes if that would bring more attention to the cause. Voting is such an important part of our democracy but it only works if everyone capable is participating in this active citizenship. The dedication that this organization has, despite the slow days, is inspiring. They celebrate the small wins and know that even registering just one person brings them closer to their overall goal. I will be continuing to work with this organization and I hope that I can create a larger impact as time goes on.
