This was such an unexpected but awesome experience! There was an unbelievable amount of trash near this side of the park. You would not have even known it was there unless you walked up there yourself. We picked up beer bottles, trash, clothes, and even journals. It was eye opening to see the extent of what was going on. It was nice to see the St. Edward's University Students for Sustainability club there to help out! I look forward to helping Pease Park become more beautiful in the Austin community!
I wasn't sure what to expect, but Im really glad I went! It was just me and the person I came with but everyone was so nice and welcoming. We helped fix the garden fence because it was uneven. At the end we got offered a cantaloupe from the garden. I would probably go back to volunteer on a nicer day when more people were volunteering.
After this service project, I couldn't wait to tell my friends and family about what I had done! We were tasked with cutting buttons from shirts. What made it so cool was that a manufacturing company used GoodWill shirts to make rags. Then they gave Austin Creative Reuse the button scraps, where the buttons were cut off and used for crafting and selling. ACR would then give the scrap pieces back to the company to make more rags! I talked with so many interesting people that volunteered often, and I can see why! I definitely want to go back, I had so much fun!
Today was fun! Through this opportunity I was able to connect with other college students and talk about community service in the area. It was awesome to be apart of something that benefited my city as well as the environment. I was in awe of the sense of community among the site, everybody was helping out everybody! I would definitely go back, just if it is to rake leaves or pull weeds!
